Isuzu . How to Make a Valve Cover Gasket Out of a Corn Flake BoxYou can learn how to make a valve cover gasket from something as simple as a corn flake box. This will save you money and last just as long as a cork gasket that you would buy from a parts store. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need corn flake box scissors pencil gasket sealantSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Make sure the corn flake box is empty. Then take box apart so it will be flat. Careful not to tear it.(Place the box so that the side with the writing is face down) 2 Take off the valve cover and clean it. If the gasket off the valve cover is usable, use that gasket to trace on the box, if its not usable use the valve cover to trace. Place it on the flat box. Trace the pattern onto the box. Make sure to trace out bolt holes. 3 Once traced, Cut out the pattern on the box. 4 Take the valve cover and put a bead of sealant where the gasket goes. Then place the new (traced) gasket onto the cover. 5 Gently press the edges of the gasket down onto the valve cover. 6 Once the gasket is on, put another bead of sealant on the gasket. 7 Carefully place it onto the head. Make sure the bolt holes are lined up. 8 Place the bolts into the bolt holes and finger snug all the bolts. 9 Once the bolts are snug, let it sit for about 10 minutes. Isuzu . How to Diagnose Excessive Oil ConsumptionAre you continuously adding oil to your car but can not figure out where it is going. Low oil levels can damage your engine and could possibly cost you lots of money in the long run. Here are some areas to check, and you're sure to find that one of these areas is the cause of your problem. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 A good place to start is to check for a loose oil drain plug, sometimes whomever changed the oil last could have become distracted for whatever reason and may not have tightened your drain plug to correct torque. 2 Check front of engine for oil spots you could possibly have a worn front cover gasket or loose or damaged front cover bolts. 3 Check around valve cover for traces of oil, worn valve cover gasket or possibly loose valve cover bolts can eventually contribute to a noticeable loss of oil. 4 Check around oil filter, filter may be loose or may not have been changed in a while. 5 Check for loose oil pressure switch 6 You could have excessively worn pistons, piston rings or cylinders. If piston rings are not installed correctly or worn they can cause an thicker oil film on cylinder walls causing you to lose oil to combustion. 7 Check your PCV valve, a faulty or worn PCV can cause excessive crankcase airflow. We study, practice, and take the test in a state of high anticipation that's marred only by the fear of failing and being "grounded" forever. Yet most of us succeed in passing and hop happily into our cars, headed for the freedom of the open road. Unfortunately, most of us don't know the first thing about the machines we're licensed to drive — and this can turn a ticket to freedom into a ticket to trouble. I'm not necessarily talking about physical danger. State motor vehicle bureaus have made fairly sure that, before we can get a driver's license, we know how to drive defensively and can handle a car under poor driving conditions. What I'm referring to is the kind of trouble that comes from depending on other people to care for and repair our vehicles. If you're like most people, you probably tend to drive around until something goes wrong and then incur the expense of replacing worn and burnt-out parts — or the entire engine — when low-cost, regular maintenance could have kept your wheels turning for a long time. About This Book Whether you're trying to cut expenses, are tired of being patronized, or have just fallen in love with your first car, this book tells you how your car works, what it needs in the way of tender loving care, and how to keep from getting ripped off if you have to entrust repairs to someone else. By handling the simple maintenance and tune-ups and being able to diagnose trouble and perform the less complex repairs yourself, you'll earn the respect of your family, your mechanic, and your car — and you'll feel pretty good about it! In this book, I introduce you to the wonders of the internal combustion engine and to the even more wondrous newfangled engines of the future. After you get familiar with the principal parts and systems involved, I gently lead you into basic maintenance and repair tasks that you can do yourself. Don't worry about getting in over your head. If a repair can get you into trouble if you attempt to do it yourself, I tell you how to be sure the work is done properly by a professional at a fair price. I also warn you when you should tackle a job only with an experienced friend or automotive teacher at your elbow. So don't chicken out on me! Start with the easy stuff and then take on the more challenging tasks. You'll love yourself for it, and your vehicle will love you, too. Believe me, I've been there.... Isuzu .
